ABOUT layered trace

Layered Trace is a series by The Clique Artworks that excavates surface as memory — a meditation on what remains visible when something is built, undone, and built again. Each piece begins from fracture: planes break apart, shift, and resettle into new configurations, never quite erasing what came before. Rendered in a restrained palette of stone, ash, charcoal, and broken white, the work resists the seduction of color in favor of something quieter and more exacting — the relationship between surface and depth, between what is shown and what is buried beneath it. The series is built through accumulation: facet upon facet, layer upon layer, each one only partially concealing the one beneath, so that the painting itself becomes a kind of archaeology. Nothing here is smooth by accident. The linear brushwork etched into every plane refuses the illusion of a single, finished gesture — instead it insists on process, on the visible labor of arriving at form, the way a hand returns again and again to the same surface until it yields. Sharp white lines cut through the compositions like fault lines or scars, marking the points where one layer gives way to the next. Passages of near-black ground the eye, anchoring the drift of grays and warm neutrals around them — a counterweight to the lightness elsewhere on the canvas. Each geometric plane reads as a moment suspended mid-transformation: neither fully resolved nor entirely undone, caught in the act of becoming. Layered Trace asks what survives revision — the seams, the overlaps, the quiet evidence of every version that came before. In this sense, the series is less about geometry itself than about time made material: the understanding that nothing is made in a single gesture, that every surface we encounter — like memory, like identity, like a life — is the sum of everything layered beneath it.
